Rummy Sequences and Sets Explained

Understand pure sequences, impure sequences and sets with a concise decision framework.

Most rummy formats ask players to arrange cards into valid sequences and sets. A sequence uses consecutive cards of the same suit, while a set uses cards of the same rank from different suits.

Pure sequence

A pure sequence contains no joker substitution. Building one early usually reduces uncertainty because it satisfies a core declaration requirement in many formats.

Impure sequence

An impure sequence uses a joker in place of a missing card. It can be flexible, but using every joker immediately may limit later options.

Sets

A set combines three or four cards of equal rank. Watch discarded cards to estimate which ranks may still be available.
